Yesterday Sri Lanka lost the bid to host the commonwealth games in Hambanthota in 2018 to Gold coast, Australia. Is this good for Sri Lanka or not? A question most of the people will be asking. Would 2018 Commonwealth games in Sri Lanka would be another event like Indian CWG? Corruption in south east Asia is high and it's a known fact. Or is it corruption is visible in South east Asia and others hide the corruption well?
eg. Australian wheat bribing scandal.
What does CWG in Sri Lanka means to the everyday people of the country. I dont think people would have care much whether we won the bid or not. But it was an opportunity for the country to showcase the country to the whole world. I think it's a good for the country to loose the bid at this time. Sri Lanka is not yet ready to take on the world. Economy needs to be stable and democracy needs to establish more before we take on a big project such as CWG. We jointly hosted Cricket world cup and now the Sri Lanka Cricket is bankrupt.
It's a lose for the government and leaders. It was a chance to mark their name in the history books. After 30 years of war country is still trying to get up and fight the terrorism in a different way. It's not a war with arms. It's a war with information and lobbying power.
I think we will be ready for CWG in 2022 or 2026, if we fix the fundamental issues in the country.
